Holy Calamity! There’s still hope for jewellery.
There comes a time when your inner fashionista grows tired of seeing the same ‘If found return to Tiffany’s’ slogan hanging from every man and his dog’s neck (no extended metaphor intended – I promise). I’ve always thought a ‘trinket’ was ‘a small item, precious to the owner as a result of sentimental or aesthetic value’, however it seems that the trinkets we decorate ourselves with nowadays represent conceited socio-economic status.
It was a relief then to discover twenty year-old Heyley Beaden’s label ‘Holy Calamity!’ Beaden creates necklaces adorned with the sweetest and most distinct trinkets I’ve seen since Iggy and Loulou discovered porcelain. Most importantly, Heyley explains, unlike your Marc Jacobs timepiece or Pandora bracelet, ‘(Each pendant’s) meaning isn’t made from a number of carats, but from the story they tell. They aim for a smile or a strange look from a passer-by’.
Indeed, the Perth girl’s ‘I’m a Little Teapot’ range inspires me to dangle the tiny ceramic handle, spout, and florally embellished teacup around my neck, just so I can play-pretend whenever my heart desires.
For those who prefer not to wear English Breakfast Tea unless it’s spilt accidentally, Heyley Beaden doesn’t limit herself to miniature tea parties on a gold chain. Also available are a pair of darling little pink sneakers, and a string of steel pearls – both of which are simple and wonderfully original concepts, and are available at the following stockists:
