She Walks with LADY

The wistful images on the walls look finished. The lavender changing room curtains with their lacy bows are just as I remember them, and the stairs to nowhere still stand as the shop’s centrepiece. The place no longer smells of fresh paint – LADY has matured from the little girl it was.

Petrova Hammond, LADY’s owner and designer, greets me in her blunt fringe and one of her own dresses. It is almost futuristic in concept; the body is navy, and holds to her body from her bust to her mid-thigh. A silver skirt, gathered at its waistline, sits in the shape of a ‘V’ from Petrova’s hips, and rises to her waist on either side of the dress. The shoulders of the dress are a bubblegum crème-pink. They rest on Petrova’s shoulders, but are not long enough to form a sleeve. The ensemble is fantastic, and reflects upon the innovative range LADY has summoned for this season.

The A/W09 collection, named ‘She Walks with Beauty’ is inspired by ethereal fairy tales and Lord Byron’s poem ‘She Walks in Beauty’. The collection’s pink-hued shoot seems a utopian mise-en-scène. This ‘once upon a time’ notion is given a kick due to the quirky patterns and cuts used by Petrova, which shape the deep purples, reds and black materials dominant throughout her collection. Furthermore ‘She Walks with Beauty’ is highly coveted throughout the Melbourne fashion scene, as Petrova produces small quantities of each piece to ensure originality for the wearer.

‘LADY has witnessed a lot of growth and change over the past year,’ explains Petrova. Furthermore, the flagship store sitting amidst Melbourne’s Flinders Lane now stocks a wide range of Australian and New Zealand designers, including Mink Pink, Karen Walker, Sretsis, I Heard They Eat Cigarettes, Alex & Alex shoes, and Tristan Blair. All the clothes and accessories decorating LADY’s beautiful interior compliment the label’s own collection with a wonderful and quirky balance.
